LTBP-GIS-Newsletter. Issue No. 3, 1999
FLASH

Alan Mills and Valerie Obsomer will be visiting the region to install the metadatabase and database to the region and teach the use of GIS and the TANGIS interface. No date has been set at present, but watch for announcements.
»Dataset of the month
The Placename gazetteer.

This is a list of 445 place names around the lake; settlements, river mouths, bays and headlands. It was put together on a Dbase spreadsheet and can be viewed in TANGIS in either UTM Zone 35 or Decimal degrees (Fig. 1). It can be used as a general navigation tool to find locations around the lake, or as a framework dataset to which other data could be attached (e.g. sampling at river mouths, fishing practice data around the lake). This is an evolving dataset, and if you have other place names you would like to see added, contact NRI. Also if you know we have spelt a name wrong, positioned it incorrectly or have alternative spellings for the same location, please tell us using the contact details below. The view above shows only one small part of it around Mahale National Park. Because of the number of entries, only a few can be named in one map as above.
